Kjell Nupen (1955-2014) var maler, skulptør og grafiker fra Kristiansand. Han var gjennom hele sitt kunstneriske virke svært aktiv, og er innkjøpt av mange offentlige institusjoner og private samlere. Nupens grafikk finnes også i mange private hjem. Kjell Nupen har, av flere årsaker, vært viktig for kunstmiljøet i Kristiansand. I 1975 startet Nupen, sammen med flere andre, fellesverkstedet Myren Grafikk. Fellesverkstedet har blitt en viktig møteplass for kommunens og regionens kunstnere og fyller i 2025 50 år. Fellesverkstedet har i dag en rekke lokale profesjonelle kunstnere med fast arbeidsplass på Myren gård. Han var også en aktiv stemme i byens utvikling og i kunstmiljøet generelt.

Krukke til Kristiansand er gitt som gave til Kristiansand i forbindelse med Hennig-Olsen Is' 70-årsjubileum i 1994. Krukken er laget ved Keramisk Verksted i Tommerup på Fyn i Danmark. Kjell Nupen lagde flere titalls krukker i sitt kunstnerskap men svært få av denne størrelsen.

I et intervju i Fædrelandsvennen 14. mai 1994 forteller "maleren Nupen": "Det var "mitt" Galleri Modern her nede i Silkeborg som satte meg på tanken om keramikk. Og det passer meg utmerket. Disse krukkene skal jo ha et kunstnerisk innhold, ikke det tradisjonelle folk har brukt dem til gjennom alle tider. Her ligger innholdet i overflaten. Folk skal se og kjenne på. Jeg håper de får en fin opplevelse. Jeg griper fatt i figurasjoner underveis, sier Kjell, og vandrer rundt leira. Det skal minst være tre-fire punkter som man skal forholde seg til."

Kjell Nupen har utført utallige kunstneriske prosjekter i det offentlige rom i Norge. I Kristiansand er han nok mest kjent for fonteneskulpturen i Otterdalsparken fra 1991, som ligger like ved Krukke til Kristiansand.

For several reasons, Kjell Nupen has been important for the art community in Kristiansand. In 1975 Nupen, along with several others, started the communal workshop Myren Grafikk. The workshop has become an important meeting place for the city's and region's artists and celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2025. Today, the workshop has a number of local professional artists with permanent workplaces at Myren gård. He was also an active voice in the city's development and in the art community in general.

Amphora for Kristiansand was given as a gift to Kristiansand in connection with Hennig-Olsen Is' 70th anniversary in 1994. The amphora was made at the Ceramic Workshop in Tommerup in Denmark. Kjell Nupen made dozens of amphoras in his artistic career but very few of this size.

In an interview with Fædrelandsvennen (local newapaper) on May 14, 1994, the "painter Nupen" says: "It was "my" Galleri Modern here in Silkeborg that put me on the idea of ceramics. And it suits me perfectly. These amphoras are supposed to have an artistic content, not the traditional use people have used them for throughout all time. Here, the content lies in the surface. People should see and feel. I hope they have a nice experience. I grasp figures along the way, says Kjell, and wanders around the clay. There should be at least three or four points to relate to."

Kjell Nupen has carried out numerous artistic projects in public spaces in Norway. In Kristiansand, he is most known for the fountain sculpture in Otterdalsparken from 1991, located near the Amphora for Kristiansand.
